Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a women’s empowerment event with Veterans Growing America, Inc. The moment I walked into the space, I didn’t feel like an outsider: I felt embraced. Women were laughing, hugging, connecting naturally. As a woman myself, I felt calm just being there. Everywhere I looked, I saw vision. Soaps, books, clothing, umbrellas and each table was a reflection of someone’s hard work, dedication, and purpose. It was a beautiful display of perseverance, connection, and creativity.
As I normally do at events, I took a moment to pause and observe. Not just with my eyes, but with all of my senses. I listened to conversations. I watched interactions. I felt the energy in the room. And what I experienced… felt warm. Like a long day finally coming to an end, sitting down, and taking that first bite of something comforting like warm apple pie with a little vanilla ice cream on top. That’s what the room felt like. Women loving on one another. Encouraging one another. Seeing one another. There was one moment that stood out to me the most. I overheard a woman talking about how she struggles with procrastination in her business. And in that moment, I couldn’t just be quiet as a photographer I had to respond as a woman!
I told her:
Start with one step. Pray first. Be honest about where you are. Then take one step! Just one. Create the page. That’s it. Don’t worry about everything else. Just take the first step. And when you do, be grateful for it.
That moment reminded me of something I needed too. As a single mom, working full-time, building a business, and serving in my community, I understand how overwhelming things can feel. But even I have to remind myself: Ketia… one step at a time. That’s what I saw in that room. Every woman there took one step. Different homes. Different lives. Different journeys. But they all made the same decision to show up. And that one step led them into a space filled with connection, growth, and encouragement.
So this is what I’ll leave with you: Take one step. Not ten. Not everything at once. Just one. Because that one step could be the very thing that leads you closer to where you’re meant to be.
I want to thank Veterans Growing America, Inc. and all of the amazing women who were present. It was truly an honor to witness and capture such a powerful experience. Let’s continue to encourage one another, support one another, and grow one step at a time.
